Marking guides
For each adventure and school year: what every question asks, the ideas the checker accepts, example answers and what the Hard evidence rule needs. Use it to mark paper tasks or to talk through an answer with a child.
The adventures check answers with simple word-matching rules in the browser, not a person and not AI. They can turn down an unusual answer that is right, and a child can sometimes pass by guessing the right words. Please use your own judgement. How answers are judged explains the rules.

Key
- Accepted ideas
- The answer needs one word or phrase from each group (or the number shown). Close spellings and some extra word forms are also accepted; short words must be spelt exactly.
- Strong, partial and weak
- Strong passes first time. Partial gets a prompt to add more (for example, a reason from the story on Hard). Weak does not pass. written examples were written as answers a child might give; made-up marks a filler example such as “I don’t know”; cut is the strong answer with its evidence taken away. Every example has been run through the real checker.
